Agility
What is Agility?
Agility is a sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. An agility course consists of a set of obstacles, laid out by an agility judge with numbers indicating the order in which the dog must complete the obstacles. Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction.

Competitions
Competitive Agility is exactly what you would imagine – obedient and well trained dogs having their abilities tested. Your dog does not have to be a pedigree – all dogs can do Agility.
If you want to compete then:
- Your dog must be registered with the Kennel Club on the Breed Register or the Activity Register.
- Dogs can only enter Agility shows when they are at least 18 months of age.
Class eligibility and exercises
There are seven levels of Agility classes at shows and dogs start in the basic Grade 1 - Elementary Class. By gaining a series of first prizes, dogs qualify through to Grade 7 - Advanced, the highest and most difficult.
Dogs are measured into one of three height categories, and the jump heights are set accordingly:
- Large - for dogs measuring over 430mm at the withers.
- Medium - for dogs measuring over 350mm and under 430mm at the withers.
- Small - for dogs measuring 350mm or under at the withers.
